Canadian M&A deals plummet 50% in 2008

TORONTO — The value of mergers and acquisitions by Canadian companies fell 50 per cent in 2008 to $131.5-billion (U.S.) as the credit crunch took the wind out of deal makers' sails, according to a study by accounting firm KPMG. In the 1,972 deals that did occur in 2008, the metals, mining and oil and gas sectors remained the dominant sectors, representing about 55 per cent of the total deal value, the firm said.
