Think of modern-day Dubai and a number of images spring to mind: the Burj Al Arab hotel that is shaped like a large sail; or the Burj Dubai tower, now the world's tallest building and growing; or man-made islands shaped like palm trees that dot the Persian Gulf shoreline, creating much-needed land for a desert nation that has gone development crazy. The emirate has made its mark on the world stage by creating some of the globe's most iconic buildings.
