Personal bankruptcies highest in 4 years

Personal bankruptcies in Canada reached their highest level in more than four years in April, data released Wednesday by the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy Canada show. Across the country, 8,035 consumers declared bankruptcy in April, up 19.3 per cent from a month earlier, and an 18.3 per cent year-over-year increase. Douglas Porter, deputy chief economist at BMO Nesbitt Burns Inc., said that “8,000 a month is definitely on the high side.
