Live Nation to launch digital music site

The world's largest concert promotion company, Live Nation Inc., plans to expand its widening footprint in the music industry with the launch of a digital music service to compete against other Internet retailers such as Apple Inc.'s iTunes. The new service will be run through the company's subsidiary Musictoday and will offer fans the chance to purchase MP3 files - which are free of copy protection technology - of songs by artists represented by Live Nation, according to Digital Music News. No launch dates or prices were given. The deal reportedly has the support of three of the four major U.S. music labels - Sony Music Entertainment, EMI Group and Universal Music Group - with Warner Music Group Corp. as the lone holdout. LYV (NYSE) fell 62 cents to $8.05 (U.S.).
