South Korea opens door, slightly, for BlackBerry
South Korea has opened its restricted telecom market slightly to allow the BlackBerry to go on sale, but only to corporations and not individuals, officials said yesterday. Officials of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and the country's Communications Commission said they would no longer apply software rules that mobile phones must use a locally developed wireless software platform known as WIPI to Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry. "The government has decided to apply exemption provisions among the regulations to the BlackBerry, classifying it as a PDA used for business purposes," a ministry official said on condition of anonymity. SK Telecom said it would offer BlackBerry services as early as August. RIM (TSX) fell $1.61 to $139.39. SKM (NYSE) fell 6 cents (U.S.) to $23.21.
