TRANSPORTATION REPORTERRailway executives might wince, but an apt motto for the rail freight industry these days could be, "Flat is the new up."For Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd., grain traffic has been one of the few bright spots, with carloads down just 0.7 per cent in the first 40 weeks of this year. Translation: Flat looks pretty good when most other commodity shipments are in a rut worse than the Toronto Maple Leafs. Carloads of metallic ores, crushed stone, sand and gravel are all down more than 30 per cent.
