  Paul Knox
spacer
Worldbeat

columnist

On Sept. 17, 1985, Paul Knox arrived in Mexico City with his family to begin work as The Globe's staff correspondent. Two days later a massive earthquake rocked the city, destroying scores of buildings and leaving an estimated 10,000 dead.

That set the tone for a hectic six years during which Paul reported from one end of Latin America to the other, living first in Mexico and then in Rio de Janeiro. He covered military coups, civil wars, natural disasters, the environment, economic upheavals and several difficult transitions to civilian rule, returning to Canada in 1991.

Paul's Worldbeat column has appeared Wednesdays and Fridays since October, 2001. He also writes news stories and features on breaking international news, global issues and foreign policy. He has returned many times to Latin America and the Caribbean, and has also covered stories in Europe, Africa and Asia.

Born in Toronto, Paul earned BA and MA degrees from the University of British Columbia. Before joining The Globe in 1978, he worked on the Vancouver Sun and the News Letter in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He has held several writing and editing posts at The Globe, and was national editor for beat reporting from 1993 to 1995.

Paul attended Harvard University as a Martin Wise Goodman Canadian Nieman Fellow in 1983-84. In 2000 he received the Maria Moors Cabot prize at Columbia University for his reporting on the Americas. He is also a commentator for the Spanish-language service of Radio Canada International, and has contributed articles to the Encyclopedia Britannica's Book of the Year.
