As If

columnist

Heather Mallick has been nominated four times for National Newspaper Awards, winning in 1994 for Critical Writing and 1996 for Feature Writing. She has worked as a reporter at the Toronto Star and The Globe and Mail, as chief copy editor at The Financial Post and as Review editor at The Sunday Sun in Toronto. She now writes the As If column for The Globe's Focus section.

Ms. Mallick grew up in various towns and cities across Canada but remembers most fondly her high school years in Kapuskasing, Ont. Those were the glory years of the Canadiens and she recalls The Globe's hockey coverage with affection. She has a B.A.Hon. from University College at the University of Toronto and an M.A. in English Literature from U of T. Her main area of study was, and is, Virginia Woolf. At something of a loss at this point, she earned a degree in journalism at Ryerson and went to work. She enjoys travel, but only in conditions of comfort. She is a competent gardener. But really, all she does is read. Extremely happily married for many years to a man of British origin who has worked in more newspapers than you've had hot dinners, but who now works in the television industry, she has two stepdaughters and two young nieces.

Her favourite quotation is "She always had the feeling that it was very, very dangerous to live even one day." It's from Mrs. Dalloway, but you knew that. Her favourite literary character is Eeyore, the gloom-laden donkey in Winnie the Pooh. Her favourite food is mushrooms; favourite smell, lilacs. Her favourite flower is the plain old red tulip, none of this fancy foreign parrot muck.
