John Heward, born in Montreal on July 31, 1934, the son of Ross Wood Heward and Hillary Beall passed away on November 6, 2018. He will be missed by his daughter, Alia Kellock Heward; his brother, Ross Heward; his sister, Prudence Morgan; their families; as well as Dov and Maya Charney; and his grandson, Zac. He will be especially missed by Sylvia Safdie, his partner of 38 years who shared with him a profoundly loving relationship through both their life and work together.

John Heward was a renowned painter and sculpture as well as an internationally recognized percussionist in free jazz. He was an influential figure in the development of abstraction and improvisation in both visual art and music. He was a great friend and mentor to many, and has gained unequivocal respect for his integrity and his warm dedication and generosity to those around him.

For the past few months John has been surrounded by his loving family and friends who were by his side to share his journey.

Our profound gratitude for the excellent care, ongoing support and compassion given by Dr. Elise Royer Perron and the dedicated nurses and caregivers without whom home care would not have been possible.

Respecting John's wishes, there will not be a funeral or memorial as he felt the artistic and musical events leading to his passing served as true tributes to him and his life's work. Charitable donations may be made to Nova Montreal w w w. n o v a m o n t r e a l . c o m or 514-866-6801 ext. 226.
