Eleanor Clitheroe,
18th Chancellor

The University of Western Ontario is pleased to announce the appointment of Eleanor Clitheroe as its 18th Chancellor. Ms. Clitheroe will serve as an honorary ambassador of the University until 2004.

Ms. Clitheroe is President and Chief Executive Officer of Hydro One Inc., a holding company with electricity transmission and distribution, telecom and energy services businesses. Her executive career began at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce where she was Vice-President, Global Treasury, and then Vice-President, Corporate Treasury. Following a term as Deputy Minister of Finance with the Ontario government, she joined Ontario Hydro as Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer and as a member of the Ontario Hydro Board of Directors.

A native of Montreal, Ms. Clitheroe serves as a Director of a number of organizations, including TD Financial Group, Dofasco Inc., INCO Limited, The Conference Board of Canada, the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies, the International Institute for Sustainable Development, the Nature Conservancy of Canada and the St. Joseph’s Health Foundation. She is also an Honorary Trustee of the Wildlife Preservation Trust, as well as a member of the Federal Standards Advisory Board.

Ms. Clitheroe has several connections to Western. She has served as a member of the Richard Ivey Alumni Board and is on Western’s Campaign Cabinet. She received her bachelor of laws degree from Western in 1977 and a master of business administration from Western in 1980. She also received a bachelor of civil law degree from McGill University in 1978.

With an enrolment exceeding 26,000 students, The University of Western Ontario is the province’s third largest university. Founded in 1878, it is recognized internationally as an innovative leader in teaching and research.
