The Brown Bunny
Vincent Gallo (U.S.)

Reports that this is the worst movie ever screened at Cannes are slightly inaccurate: Both Michael Cimino and Johnny Depp have shown films in recent years that were worse. The Brown Bunny is mannered and absurdly solemn but occasionally funny in its deadpan way (in a long single take as Gallo stops his van, gets out of the car, takes off his sweater, puts it in the back of the van, closes the door and goes back to the driver seat.) The story is about a motorcycle racer crossing America in a van while mourning his true love's death and it famously features a scene of actress ChloŽ Sevigny fellating the director-star. The event is apparently either an allegory, a fantasy or just a cheap excuse. —L.L.
