Behind the Story

Margaret Philp and Patti Gower first ventured into the ravines of Toronto in the steamy days of July 2000, when the cover of leaves on the trees obscured the people who lived behind them.

While stories were legend about the growing number of homeless people crowded onto Toronto curbsides, the pair was curious about the people tucked in the woods. No one doubted that people were camped in the ravine, and yet few had any inkling of who they were, how they lived, or why they were there.

Patti Gower
The more people they met who claimed to live in the ravine throughout the seasons, the more they wanted to document the lives of this colourful cast of characters as the balmy summer weather gave way to the bleak, bitter days of fall and winter.

What followed was eight months of exploring the Toronto wilderness for the telltale tents and sleeping bags, reaching out to people living as outcasts and documenting their stories.
