He masterminded Tory election triumphs

The first time Doug Finley applied to work for Stephen Harper, he didn't get the job.Mr. Harper, then the Leader of the Canadian Alliance, and Don Plett, who was the party's president, were looking for a director of political operations. Mr. Finley was interviewed ''and we didn't hire him,'' says Mr. Plett.


Allan (Piinotoyi) Shade

Allan (Piinotoyi) Shade was born in a tent, with his great-grandmothers as midwives, near Fish Creek on the Blood Indian Reserve in Alberta. His parents were Chris (Kainaikowan) and Kate (Aapisookaakii) Shade.


Newsman Neil Reynolds dies

Neil Reynolds, one of Canada's most storied newspaper editors and a Globe and Mail columnist, died of cancer in Ottawa Sunday. He was 72.A native of Kingston, Ont., Mr. Reynolds worked his way through several newsrooms, rising to city editor at the Toronto Star by the mid-1970s. He left that job abruptly to take a posting at his hometown newspaper, the Whig-Standard.
