David has had a lifelong commitment to the law, to social justice and to the environment.
David was :
* Founding chairman of the United Church Peace Network (1981), and Toronto’s Interfaith Peace Committee involving over 40 different religions in the pursuit of peace.
* Founding president of Lawyers for Social Responsibility (LSR) in 1982. LSR is a member of a worldwide organization of lawyers (IALANA) working to strengthen the United Nations and International Law.
* Mayoralty candidate in Markham Ontario, in a one-issue campaign to raise public awareness of the threat to our existence posed by nuclear weapons.
David also chaired the Markham Citizens for Nuclear Disarmament, as well as the Canadian Foundation for the Advancement of International Law. Other national organizations in which David has served as a director include Operation Dismantle, Veterans Against Nuclear Arms, and the editorial board of Peace Magazine.
Internationally, David has addressed tribunals and conferences in London, Brussels and Tokyo, met with Senators, State Department Officials and Congress persons in Washington, and represented the Canadian United Nations Association on an international, 8 person, observation team monitoring the sixth vote on the Compact of Free Association with the United States in the UN strategic trust territory of Palau.
At the civic level , David has chaired the Plan Nanaimo Advisory Committee, the Hammond Bay Neighbourhood Association; and served on environmental and waste-management advisory committees for both the City of Nanaimo and the Nanaimo Regional District.
David is determined to leave a better and sustainable world to his grandchildren and succeeding generations. and was particularly active in the successful campaigns to preserve Neck Point Park and the Linley Valley.
To represent the Green Party of Canada, and serve the residents of Nanaimo-Alberni as a member of parliament.
