Mr. Werner Schmidt was born on January 18, 1932 in Coaldale, Alberta. His mother immigrated from the Ukraine and his father from Russia. Mr. Schmidt has been married to the former Teena Friesen for 47 years. They have two married sons, Alan (Lori) and Dwayne (Cheryl), and two grandsons, Wyatt and Tyler.
Mr. Schmidt's education includes a Bachelor of Education, Secondary and a Masters of Education in Educational Administration, both from the University of Alberta.
His parliamentary career began on October 25, 1993 with his election to the House of Commons as the representative of the south-central British Columbia riding of Okanagan Centre.
He was re-elected for the renamed riding of Kelowna on June 2, 1997. Mr. Schmidt achieved his third straight electoral victory in November 2000.
Mr. Schmidt is currently the Conservative Party Caucus Vice Chair and is a member of the Standing Committee on Finance as well as the Joint Standing Committee on the Library of Parliament.
Previous to his career as a Member of Parliament, Mr. Schmidt served in many capacities in both the public and private sectors, including teacher, principal and Superintendent of Schools in the Edmonton area; Executive Director of the Alberta School Trustees Association; Executive Committee, Board of Governors, University of Alberta; vice-president -- Academic, Lethbridge Community College; vice-president of Easy-X Cattlemen Ltd., a cattle feedlot; Account Executive, Levesque Beaubien Inc, Edmonton; Director of Development, Okanagan University College, Kelowna; and, financial planning and investment advisor.
Mr. Schmidt joined the Rotary Club of Leduc in 1979 and also served as Director of the Rotary Club of Northeast Edmonton. He currently enjoys membership in Kelowna's Sunrise Rotary International Club as well as the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce and has served as a director of the United Way in Kelowna. Additional political activities include Leader of the Alberta Social Credit Party from 1973 to 1975, founding member and member of the first Executive Council of the Reform Party of Canada, and founding member and Caucus Chairman of the Canadian Alliance.
Leisure activities include golf, skiing, woodworking as well as an interest in local classical music performances and local sports.
First elected to the House of Commons in 1993.
