Joy Smith is a respected educator, best selling author, politician and mother of six grown children. She is a popular speaker and is in high demand as a seminar and workshop presenter on the topic of public involvement in politics.
Joy holds Bachelor and Master Degrees in Education, majoring in Math and Science and taught for 21 years. She also holds Special Education Certification and is a qualified music teacher. She is the holder of the Hedley Award for Excellence in Research.
She is a best-selling author and her books and writings are a frequent reference guide for those interested in education.
Joy ran a small business for several years and was nominated as the Manitoba Woman Entrepreneur of the Year in 1996.
She was elected to the Manitoba Provincial Legislature in 1999 as the Progressive Conservative MLA for Fort Garry. During her tenure in the Legislature, she served as Critic for Justice, Education, and Intergovernmental (Urban) Affairs; and was Deputy Critic for Labour. Joy was also a member of several provincial Committees and served on the Manitoba Task Force for Building Sustainable Communities.
On September 8, 2004, Joy was nominated as the official candidate for Winnipeg North/St. Paul for the Canadian Alliance Party of Canada; and on February 16, 2004, she was nominated as the official candidate for the newly formed Conservative Party of Canada in Kildonan-St. Paul. Prior to the formation of the new party, Joy had held simultaneous memberships in both federal parties, with the ongoing hope that the two would evolve into a single entity.
Joy Smith was raised on a farm in southern Manitoba. She and her husband Bart are life-long residents of Manitoba.
