Merv was born and raised in Medora, Manitoba.
He served as a municipal councillor and deputy reeve for five years.
He has been active on many business councils and chambers.
He is also very involved in sports, coaching senior hockey, minor hockey, ringette and baseball as well as serving on sports & recreation committees.
In 1995, Merv made a career change and got into the world of provincial politics. Elected in 1995, Merv worked as the Legislative Assistant to Rural Development and Health and became the Minister of Industry Trade & Tourism.
Merv co-chaired the “Working for Value” task force which would serve as a blueprint for growing Rural Manitoba.
Merv currently sits as an opposition member of the Manitoba Provincial Legislature, as the MLA for Turtle Mountain.
Merv is married to Bev, a registered nurse. They have 3 children. Jennifer is a teacher, Charles is a student at Brandon University and Matthew is graduating this year from Killarney School.
