· Immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong at the age of 13

· Career in public service began in 1976 in the emergency ward at Toronto General Hospital, where she was a volunteer counselor in the crisis intervention unit

· Earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts from the University of Guelph

· After working for several social service agencies, became assistant to Dan Heap, the NDP Member of Parliament for Trinity Spadina, in 1981

· Elected as a public school trustee (Wards 5 and 6) in 1985; held that post until 1991

· Elected as Metro Councillor for the downtown ward as the first Asian woman to be elected at the municipal level in Toronto

· In 1997, following amalgamation, elected City Councillor in the new mega-city ward of Downtown

· In 1998, named Toronto's Children and Youth Advocate

· In this role, secured funding to double the number of children served by nutrition programs (now feeding over 47,000 children), made basic dental services available for Toronto's poorest children and seniors, and has worked to make our newborns healthier by expanding pre- and post-natal services

· Secured funds to help 11,600 children living in poverty receive computers to aid in schoolwork

· A member of the City's Budget Committee from 1994 to 2003

· An avid cyclist, chaired the City Cycling Committee and was successful in persuading Council to approve a 10-year Bicycling Plan that will build over 1,000 km of new bike lanes

· Has been voted Best City Councillor six times by NOW magazine readers and Best Local Politician by EYE magazine readers four times

· In addition to her political career, has been a columnist for Modern Times Weekly (1986-1987) and a commentator for a weekly Chinese program on CHIN radio

· From 1995 to 2002, lectured at George Brown College in the Counselling and Advocacy for Assaulted Women and Children Program

· Current Chair of the Community Services Committee and the Children and Youth Action Committee

· Co-Chair of the Toronto Cycling Committee and the Toronto Island Airport Community Advisory Committee

· Board member of the Toronto Community Housing Corporation, Toronto Public Library, Art Gallery of Ontario, Harbourfront Centre, Scadding Court Community Centre, Association of Municipalities of Ontario, Toronto You Belong Here Task Force

· Fluent in Cantonese and English

· Lives in Trinity Spadina with her mother Ho Sze, husband Jack Layton, children Sarah and Michael and her cat Maui.
