Tom Wappel was first elected to represent the riding of Scarborough West in 1988, and was re-elected in 1993. He was then elected for the riding of Scarborough Southwest in 1997 and 2000.
Mr. Wappel has served as Chairman of the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans, as a Member, Chairman and Vice-Chairman on the Joint House of Commons and Senate Standing Committee on the Scrutiny of Regulations, as Chairman of the Canada-Hungary Parliamentary Friendship Group, as Vice-Chairman of the Canada-China Legislative Association, and as Vice-Chairman of the Canada-Syria Friendship Group.
He is also a past member of the standing committees on citizenship and immigration, environment and sustainable development, and justice and legal affairs. He is the past Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee on Labour, Employment and Immigration.
He was also the Opposition Critic for National Revenue in 1990, Immigration Critic in 1991 and Critic for the Solicitor General from 1991-93. In 19990, he ran for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada.
Mr. Wappel is very active in his community, serving as a member of several organizations like the Knights of Columbus, the Knight of Grace, the Canadian Bar Association, the Ruskin Literary and Debating Society, and the Hungarian-Canadian Cultural Centre.
