Leslie Bartley was born in Toronto the elder of two children. She grew up in a home where politics, social issues and social compassion were not only the basis of lively discussion, but also modeled. She grew up in Mississauga before attending the University of Guelph. Leslie has been married to Jerald for 20 years, and they are raising three boys.
In 1986, Leslie and Jerry assumed a family business, Bartley's Dairy Bar, in Woodstock, Ontario, which they have operated for the past 18 years.
In 1989, Leslie joined with other concerned citizens to form a local environmental group, and soon after became active in her community working successfully with others to prevent a biomedical waste incinerator from locating in the city of Woodstock.
In 1999, Leslie's concern for social justice, led her to become the chairperson and spokesperson for a concerned citizens group which formed to oppose a Slot Casino proposed for the Woodstock Raceway. She remains active with Gambling Watch Ontario.
