Steve Strauss was born in Kitchener, Ontario in 1959. He was raised the youngest of five siblings by a hard-working single parent. As a teenager attending high school at Cameron Heights, Steve worked full-time at a local gas station to pay for pilot lessons at the Waterloo-Wellington Airport so that he could one day fly in the Canadian Air Force. His early experiences taught Steve the value of hard work, the importance of a caring community and the viability of the Canadian dream.
Steve was educated at the Royal Military College of Canada where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree. After graduation, as an Air Force Pilot, Steve flew the Tutor jet, the Hercules aircraft and the Kiowa and Griffin tactical helicopters. Steve flew search and rescue, humanitarian, and tactical missions. Steve is proud to have served his country in this way and would be honoured to serve in a new capacity as a parliamentarian. His service in the military crystallized his belief that Canada must continue its tradition of protecting human rights and democracy through peacekeeping.
In 1987, Steve joined Air Canada where he is currently an Airbus A320 Captain. As both an Air Force and airline pilot, Steve has travelled extensively throughout Canada and around the world to over fifty foreign countries. He also spent two years based in Kuwait flying throughout the Middle East.
A dedicated family man, Steve and his wife Lavinica have two children. Their son, Matthew, attends the University of Waterloo and daughter, Veronica, will attend Wilfrid Laurier University next fall. Steve is an accomplished skydiver, scuba diver and martial artist.
