Tony Valeri was first elected as a member of Parliament in 1993 and re-elected in 1997 and 2000. On December 12, 2003 Mr. Valeri was given the honour of being appointed the Minister of Transport for the new Paul Martin Government. He currently serves as a member of the following cabinet committees: Operations; Priorities and Planning; Domestic Affairs; Canada-U.S; Security, Public Health and Emergencies; and Expenditure Review.

Mr. Valeri has a distinguished career as a parliamentarian serving the constituents of Stoney Creek in various capacities. In 1997, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance and served until 1999. After completing his term as a valued advisor to Mr. Martin, he served as Chair of the Standing Committee of Government Operations.

He has ensured that the voice of the people of Stoney Creek is heard by serving on many Parliamentary Standing Committees: Finance, Liaison, Industry, Environment and Sustainable Development. In June 2001, Mr. Valeri was elected by his colleagues to chair the non-partisan Parliamentary Steel Caucus.

Before entering federal politics, Mr. Valeri was President of Canadian Financial Group Ltd. He was also a member of numerous business organizations, including a term as Director of the Board of the Independent Brokers Life Insurance of Canada Association. In 1979, he earned a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) degree from McMaster University.

Mr. Valeri was born in Hamilton in 1957 and lives with his wife Terri and their two children in Stoney Creek, Ontario.
