After a 30 year-career as a banker, Roy Fjarlie retired as an Assistant General Manager at the executive offices of a major Canadian Financial Institution. For 15 years before he retired, Mr. Fjarlie regularly made the trip from Toronto to Maxville Ontario to work on the family farm. He and his wife Nancy, a retired teacher, now live on the farm full time, growing organic grains. Roy also does custom work for organic farmers in the area. They have two grown children.
"Like most Canadians, we have spent our lives providing the best we could for our family and now that we are retired, we have chosen to do whatever we can to leave a better environment for all. We have come to realize just how crucial sustainable practices are to our survival and just how closely rooted our economy is to our environment. That is why I have decided to run for the Green Party."
I and countless others across Canada have become troubled at how the business of the people of Canada has and is being conducted by the Government of Canada.
The Green Party wants change, from specific election dates and proportional representation in Parliament ensuring all voters are represented, to the application of policies that will ensure our natural resources of land, air, water, and oceans are cleaned, protected from further contamination and sustained. People, and the economy of Canada will ultimately benefit from such policies through job creation and technological innovation. Canada can also be a leader in the world in the development and export of business solutions and technical expertise to correct environmental problems. Canadians have the resources, the brains, the drive and the determination to make it happen.
Liberalism, conservatism, and social democracy are all historically based on the idea that we can keep expanding our material base without limits. The Green Party is a party whose basis for action uses the starting point of sustainability and the premise that an economy and culture must be built recognizing the finite limits of Planet Earth.
It has taken generations of neglect with our care of the earth and of short-sighted political delay or decisions to bring us to the edge of environmental ruin. Reversing the situation will not happen overnight and will require judicious long term planning, clear establishment of priorities, and a great deal of conviction.
It is a challenge to be the Green Party candidate in this large riding of Glengarry Prescott Russell. There has been a phenomenal increase in the support the Green Party is receiving at both the national and local level, and Green Party principles are becoming more and more important to Canadians. The Green Party is committed to creating a Better Way to Live!
