Gar Knutson was first elected to Parliament in 1993. On December 12, 2003, he was named Minister of State for New and Emerging Markets, a portfolio in International Trade.
He has served as Secretary of State (Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle Eastand Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister.
He has also been a member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development, the Standing Joint Committee on Scrutiny of Regulations, and the House of Commons Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans.
Prior to his election in 1993, Mr. Knutson managed a small business support corporation and was a part-time instructor at Fanshawe College.
He has been highly involved and committed to improving the social conditions of disadvantaged Canadians and their children.
He has advocated for municipal infrastructure funding and Internet service to rural libraries and schools. As an MP with agricultural interests throughout the riding, Mr. Knutson has been, and will continue to be, committed to fighting for a more adequate farm assistance program.
Mr. Knutson has a law degree from the University of Windsor and a Masters Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario.
He and his wife, Christine, have three children: William, Clare and Michael.
