Joe Volpe was first elected to the House of Commons in 1988 and was re-elected in all subsequent elections. He has served as a member of the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology.
From 1999 to 2000, he served as Chair of the Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations.
From 1998 to 1999, he served as Chair of the Standing Committee on Health. Under his leadership, the Committee completed a comprehensive study of national health products in Canada, and an extensive study on the state of organ transplantation in Canada. He also served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health from 1996 to 1998.
In addition to these duties, he serves as Co-Chair of the Canada-China Legislative Association, as well as Chair of the Canada-China Parliamentary Friendship Group.
Before entering politics, Mr. Volpe was a school principal. He holds a Master of Education degree from the University of Toronto. He is married and has four children.
