Jean-Guy Mercier, who graduated from the École des Hautes études commerciales, is a farmer.
In addition to farming, Mr. Mercier has taught accounting, was an Administrator and Manager in the education sector, and served as a Member of the Québec National Assembly (from 1976 to 1981). He has also worked as a journalist and has been involved in the farm union movement.
Working as a farmer for more than 30 years, Mr. Mercier has specialized in cattle raising, grain production and forestry operation.
He has been actively involved in federal politics for several years and ran under the Canadian Alliance banner in the St-Maurice riding during the 2000 general election.
“My experience as a farmer and a former member of the Québec National Assembly has shown me that anyone interested in getting involved in politics must have two essential qualities: patience and the desire to serve others. In my opinion, Stephen Harper has these qualities, which is why I support him as leader of the new Conservative Party, the only real alternative to Paul Martin’s Liberals.”
