An engineer, Bruno-Marie Béchard started his career in the aeronautics industry before joining the faculty of the Université de Sherbrooke in 1992.
The significant international recognition he acquired led to the founding of the Réseau universitaire québécois pour l'enseignement et la recherche en qualité (RUQEREQ), and the co-founding of its international equivalent based in Switzerland, the RUMEREQ.
In the same measure, he also created the first French international scientific magazine on quality called FORUM Qualité SCIENTIFIQUE. His accomplishments led him to become associate professor in 1998 and teaching master in 2000.
In 1997, he became Director of the Engineering Master’s Program and Assistant Dean of Vocational Training and Technological Transfer for the Department of Engineering. In this position, he is able to create a new cooperative education program for graduate students, an approach that has since been adopted by other faculties and which has become a characteristic of the Université de Sherbrooke.
Appointed Vice-President of Administration in 1998, Monsieur Béchard decentralized the management of the university and mapped out the major projects, in particular concerning the development of campuses and the integration of information technologies and communications. He also played a crucial role in the negotiation of the university’s reinvestments and the performance contract with the Government of Quebec in order to ensure development conditions that are favorable for the Université de Sherbrooke.
Since June 1st, 2001, he has been the eighth Dean of the Université de Sherbrooke. Elected at the age of 36, he became the youngest dean in America.
