Gilbert Barrette was elected as the member for Abitibi—Témiscamingue during a by-election in June 2003. He is a member of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food and is also vice-chair of the Standing Committee on Health. He has also contributed to the Special Committee on the Non-medical Use of Drugs and to the Liberal Task Force on Seniors.
Mr. Barrette is an educator and school administrator by profession, working in and around the municipality of La Sarre. He was first an English teacher from 1962 to 1973, became a school principal in 1973, and retired from education in 1995.
Mr. Barrette is very involved in his community. He is a member of several boards and for a number of years chaired the Abitibi-Témiscamingue Health and Social Services Board.
He obtained his class ‘B’ teaching license in 1962 and a teaching English degree in 1975.
On February 22, the members of the Abitibi-Témiscamingue federal Liberal association selected Mr. Barrette as the Liberal Party of Canada candidate for the next elections.
