· Elected to the House of Commons in 1997 and re-elected in 2000

· Born in Saint-Sauveur, New Brunswick

· Studied at École Népisiguit in Bathurst

· As a teenager, worked in Ontario; returning to his home village, worked in the mining industry

· At 24, elected Treasurer of the United Steelworkers of America, Brunswick Mine Local, in Bathurst; became President of that Local in 1982, a position he held until 1988

· From 1988 to 1997, worked for the United Steelworkers, representing nearly 2,500 members and negotiating 37 collective agreements in north-eastern and north-western New Brunswick

· A founding member of the Allardville Fire Brigade and President of the Allardville Local Service District

· Serves as the NDP Critic on Employment Insurance, Official Languages and Small and Medium Business, and as the NDP Whip in the House of Commons

· During his first term as MP, pressured the government to require warning labels on plastic toys containing toxic materials

· In 1998-99, undertook a three-month tour of Canada to assess the impact of recent changes to the Employment Insurance program, the findings of which were public in a report entitled, ‘The Human Face: Employment Insurance’, which describes the harmful effects and disastrous impact of the changes to EI

· In 2000, presented a motion adopted unanimously by the House of Commons demanding the federal government revise the EI program

· For the past seven years, represented workers as a member of the minimum wage committee under the Minister of Labour and as a member of the federal committee on training for miners and fish processing plant workers
