· First elected to Parliament in June 1997 and re-elected in November 2000

· Serves as the federal NDP critic for ACOA, Fisheries and Oceans, National Parks, Natural Resources, Regional and Rural Development, the softwood lumber issue and Tourism

· Born in Heerlen, Netherlands in 1956 and immigrated to Canada as a child with his family

· Grew up in Richmond, British Columbia; lived in Watson Lake, Yukon for nine years and moved to Nova Scotia in 1988

· Before becoming an MP, worked at Canadian Airlines for 18 years

· Has been active in the environmental and charitable movements

· Honoured with a Conservation Award for 2003 from the Nova Scotia Wildlife Federation

· Received a Community Service Award and an Award of Merit from the Nova Scotia Department of the Environment

· Was a guest of Prince Philip at a special dinner sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund of Canada

· Given the “Green MP” award in 2000 from the Sierra Legal Defence Fund -- one of only 13 MPs to receive this award

· Member of the Community Advisory Committee of the Halifax International Airport

· Member of the Royal Canadian Legion

· Lives with his wife, Andrea, and their two daughters live in Windsor Junction

· Enjoys hiking, golf, coaching soccer and playing soccer with the Sackville Masters.
