∑ Born in Leaside, on the east side of Toronto, 59 years ago

∑ Grew up in Sarnia and Ottawa

∑ Studied English Literature at Acadia University

∑ First work after college in 1967 was in Syndey Mines, Cape Breton, sent by the Company of Young Canadians to work as a community organizer with the coal miners who lived in a tiny neighbourhood huddled next to the Princess Pit

∑ Later went to work with John Sewell and others in the Toronto Community Union Project

∑ Worked as an inner city community organizer in Montreal

∑ Lived in St. Stephen, but I worked all over New Brunswick with farmers, fishermen, lumberjacks and other everyday folks -- trying to help them catch a fair break for themselves for a change

∑ In 1976, with wife and friends, pooled all $1,700 of life savings and started The Plain Dealer in Fredericton -- a weekly newspaper dedicated to break the death-grip the Irvings had on all the newsóand just about every other important thingóin New Brunswick at the time

∑ The Plain Dealer held out for 18 glorious months

∑ Later served as Editor of The Commonwealth, the official newspaper of the Saskatchewan NDP

∑ Moved back to Ottawa in 1980 and took up freelance work, including projects for a number of unions

∑ Life as a freelancer meant creating and producing just about every kind of thing you can do in print, radio or television

∑ Moved back to Nova Scotia in 1999, settling in Delhaven-by-the-Sea, just below Cape Blomidon

∑ Married to Brenda for 35 years; they have two grown daughters and a granddaughter.
