All his life, Rev. Des McGrath has worked for working people and their communities

Rev. Desmond McGrath is co-founder of the Fish Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW/CAW) and has been an Education Officer with the FFAW for 10 years

Received the commemorative medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada in 1992, an honorary life membership in the Canadian Council of Professional Fish Harvesters in 2002, and is an Officer of the Order of Canada

He is Secretary to the Certification Board of Professional Fish Harvesters of Newfoundland and Labrador

Played an instrumental role in establishing certification boards for professional fish harvesters in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Maritimes and British Columbia

Helped found the National Council of Professional Fish Harvesters in Ottawa, as well as four Credit Unions for fish harvesters in Newfoundland and Labrador

Established 16 adult learning centres in Newfoundland and Labrador with the onset of the cod moratorium in 1992

Serves on the FPI Board of Directors and has extensive knowledge of the Canadian fishery industry

Studied at St. Francis Xavier University and St. Augustine's Seminary prior to becoming an ordained priest in 1961. He held a number of clerical appointments throughout Newfoundland prior to retiring from active ministry in 2000

Recipient of Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from Memorial University and St. Francis Xavier University
