Lawrence O’Brien was first elected to the House of Commons on March 25, 1996 in a by-election, and re-elected in June 1997 and November 2000. Over the years, he has represented his constituents with dedication.
He served as a member of the House of Commons Fisheries and Oceans , and from 1999 to 2001 served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. Since January 2003, he has been a member of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs.
From 1985 to 1996, Mr. O’Brien was a town councillor in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. During this period, he was active in numerous projects and conferences in Labrador. He served as Chair of the Innu and Inuit Funding Agreements, and was a member of the Northern Ministers’ Conference Planning Committee.
He is known in the region for his boundless and longstanding work to improve the community’s quality of life. He held the position of Director of Labrador Development, Department of Rural, Agricultural and Northern Development, and director of Northern Community Development, Enterprise Newfoundland and Labrador.
Mr. O’Brien was born in L’Anse au Loup, Labrador in 1951. After attending Memorial University, he worked as a high school teacher and an adult education instructor in Labrador.
He and his wife, Alice, have two children and currently reside in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
